Around every celebrity, especially if he is surrounded by a halo of accomplished feats, many oral rumors inevitably appear, which gradually turn into legends. Of course, such a legendary pilot as Nikolai Skomorokhov could not avoid this fate.

Leading source of the winner’s parade

Whatever they say about him! And he carried the Flag of Victory at the Parade and cruelly avenged the death of his friend by searching for and destroying both perpetrators, and he went through the whole war without a scratch, and Visoktski dedicated songs about pilots to him

  • Someone frugal and clear
  • He was counting our hours
  • Our life is short
  • Like concrete strips, –
  • And on it – who collapsed,
  • Who – downloaded forever…
  • Well, I landed, –
  • That is the problem… V. Visotski “Song about the late pilot”
  • And much more… Let’s look at these moments of our lives that are not similar.

For the first time, Skomorokhov had the opportunity to walk through Red Square among other heroes of the Soviet Union on June 24, 1945, the most important Parade in the history of our homeland – the Victory Parade. Then, digging a clear step and keeping equal to the right, he could not imagine that this would not be the last Parade in which he would have to participate. Over twenty times, marching through Red Square in front of the military unit he led, General Skomorokhov probably had the same picture in front of his eyes: the mausoleum on which stands the entire leadership of the country, and among them a man on whose behalf a million Soviet soldiers went into battle.

But another Parade took place, which took place in May 1985, and the narrators seem to remember that. Then, as part of the 40th anniversary of the victory over fascism, the air marshal twice defeated the hero of the Soviet Union N. M. Skomorokhov was entrusted with the honorary right to carry a historical banner on Red Square.

Consider a photo of this moment. It’s hard to believe there are veterans who are already past sixty. What a correction, how high their heads are raised, how proud they are of their great people! The following assistants walk past Skomorokhov: Hero of the Soviet Union, full cavalier of the Order of Glory, Sergeant Major N. I. Kuznetsov, Hero of Socialist Labor, full cavalier of the Order of Glory, Sergeant Major P. A. Litvinenko, a hero of the Soviet Union, Colonel S. A. Neustrojev awarded this high title for planting the Flag of Victory on the dome of the Reichstag together with Kantarija and Egorov and the hero of the Soviet Union, Colonel N. M. Fomenkom. Behind them are banners from all ten fronts, carried along Red Square back in 1941.

Nikolai Mikhailovich was a friend of the family with the Visocki brothers – Semion Vladimirovich and Alexei Vladimirovich. They met often. and as they all went through the war to victory, they often remembered their military past. It happened that their son Semjon Vladimirović, a famous poet, also attended their meetings. Somehow, there was talk about how the pilots of the fascist “Diamond Squadron” shot down Nikolai Skomorokhov’s friend, Captain Nikolai Gorbunov, in battle. The story of a late friend and regret that he himself could not help him because he was not in the air, inspired Vladimir Vysotsky on the song “About the Fallen Pilot”, first performed in the play “Stars for a Lieutenant” in the Moscow theater named after Ermolov in 1975. But the story of that battle was described by Alexei Visotski in the article “Diamond Two”, published in the newspaper Krasnaya Zvezda 11.

“Diamond Two” was a German pair of fighters, whose pilots were personally awarded Hitler’s diamond crosses for special merits in the war. Such pilots assembled an entire squadron. It was easy to recognize their aircraft by the yellow-yellow propeller coke. They usually flew in pairs. At the very end of the war, on May 20, 1944, just such a couple killed a close friend of Nikolai Skomorokhov across the Danube – their namesake, a hero of the Soviet Union, Captain Nikolai Gorbunov. Skororokhov accepted the death of his friend very close to his heart and promised to take revenge on him. A day later, in the next fight, he came across a very experienced opponent. It is obvious that this was one of the “diamonds”. They spun for a long time trying to find a position suitable for a decisive attack. Finally, “vertically”, Skomorokhov managed to plant a good part of the lead in the Germans.

A few days later, Nikolaj was attacked by four “Messers” with yellow coca. Skororokhov rushed into battle, but one Messer began to pull him back, as if inviting him to a knightly duel, one on one. Our pilot accepted the challenge, and Lavochkin also rushed. At the maximum allowed height, when even the oxygen mask did not spare and consciousness began to blur, Skomorokhov managed to find himself a fascist at one of the bends. The pilot jumped with a parachute, but fell to the ground trapped. It turned out that the deputy squadron commander, who together with his commander shot down Gorbunov, also decided to take revenge on Skomorokhov for the death of his friend, but he was defeated. And so it happened that Skomorokhov fulfilled his promise given at the grave of a friend, but the Germans did not succeed.

Well, the fact that Skomorokhov was the only pilot who, having performed 605 combat operations, performed 143 battles, personally shot down 46 enemy planes and 8 more in a group, was not only never shot down and burned, but did not receive a single hole in the battle, and nothing to say. Everyone considered him magical. He himself liked to repeat one commandment: “An air fighter is not only the one who shoots down, but also the one who knows how not to shoot it down by himself.”
